Oculus Rifts Around the World Encounter Fatal Error

Oculus Rift owners the world over have had a bit of a head scratching time with their systems lately. Starting some time yesterday, Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets started displaying an error that read: “Can't Reach Oculus Runtime Service.” Once this error appeared, the Oculus app, which powers the headset, could not be restarted. Everyone (including some new buyers) were left with what are essentially very expensive paperweights.

Some Oculus Rift owners have taken to searching through their systems to find a potential explanation. One such person seemed to have found something that could explain everything. Supposedly, the security certificate within the Oculus Rift has expired as of March 7, 2018. What this means is that some operating systems are blocking the Oculus app because of its lack of certificate.

Oculus has announced on Twitter that they are aware of the issue and are working to fix the problem. They have set up a particular thread in the Oculus forums that users can keep an eye on for the most recent updates on the situation. Until then, it looks like Oculus Rift users will have to find something else to do with their time. Hopefully the fix comes quickly for all involved.
