Chrono Trigger on PCs Gets Classic Visuals
Chrono Trigger

The saga of Chrono Trigger on Steam now appears to have the beginnings of a happy ending. After a brutal launch full of disappointed and angry fans, Square Enix has done the unthinkable and actually started to address the problems.

Before, Chrono Trigger on PCs was a direct port of the updated mobile version. That means that not only did the visuals have some horrific filtering on top of them that made the game look awful, but it also had a really unsightly UI based on a touchscreen interface. What resulted was a Chrono Trigger on modern hardware, at an affordable price, that nobody with any sense would want to buy.

Square Enix announced after a time that the team would be addressing these complaints, and announced a series of updates to come along with an extension of the “limited edition” availability. The first of those updates are now live, and it’s so substantial people are already going back to buy the game.

Now, Chrono Trigger asks you at the beginning if you want the classic or new visuals, and you can also toggle in the menu. You’ll never want to, but the option is there. The font has also been changed to be more like the DS version of Chrono Trigger, and a lot of the huge buttons have been removed, making battle scenes in particular much better-looking.
