It’s been a weird week for Insomniac Games and Marvel’s Spider-Man. After a wave of gamer rage and Twitter harassment spawning from the ostensible exclusion of a suit from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, the suit has been added to the game for free. This was not a move in response to the fan outcry, but something that was planned all along.
In fact, several members of the Insomniac Games team have confirmed on social media, including the person mostly responsible for modeling the suit (including actual geometry for the web lines, holy cow), that the Sam Raimi suit had been in the works since before Marvel’s Spider-Man was even released back in September 2018. For all the anger and finger-pointing the smaller, louder parts of the fanbase did, little did they know what they were mad about was a total non-issue.
Hopefully, the takeaway from this is that making video games is complicated, and you never know what will end up happening in the end. Hopefully, the takeaway is not, “We got what we wanted because we yelled.” That is absolutely not the truth here.
