Sonic Coming to Next-Gen and More Sega News

Sega fans, we have excellent news for you!

First, Sega has announced a "re-invention" of Sonic the Hedgehog. That’s right, your favorite Sega Genesis character is making his way from 1991 to 2006 and racing his way onto the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year.

Not only is Sega bringing back the original loveable character, but it is also bringing back those original, loveable developers, Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima. Naka will "create the most intense sensation of speed ever experienced in video games" while overseeing game development. Ohshima will be leading character design.

"We are proud to recreate our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," Naka explained. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than fifteen years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The ‘rebirth of Sonic’ will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by new systems."

Friend? Hero? Legend? Anyone that feels that strongly about the Sonic the Hedgehog is bound to bring us a good game.

Second, Chromehounds has been given a release date for next spring, around the same time the PS3 is suggested to launch. The game will be "an absorbing single-player campaign and a fully customizable Xbox Live experience," Scott Steinberg, Sega of America Vice President of Marketing, explained. The game will also allow "cooperative and competitive campaigns for up to twelve players" and "thousands of upgrade options which affect both the look and performance of player mechs". No rating or pricing information is known yet.
